Isla Trip 11/4 - 11/9/06

Just got to sitting down to reflect on our trip to Isla Mujeres. Overall we had a great time, run in to the usual 3rd World vaca problems.

If you choose to see our pics you may do so at:

Instead of writing a diary of our trip, I thought it easier to do "Highlights" and "Lowlights"

Highlights -

The overall food on the Island -
Baseball Tacos or Tacos Campos - the best food period! great service too!
Picus - Best Seafood!
M&J Cuzuela - Best Breakfast!
Alamar Lounge - Best ambiance under a palapa roof and #1 Margaritas - mexican/asian fusion, supurb service
Tic n Xic Fish - Either at Playa Lanchera or Tiburon
Beer - Montejo and all others just taste better in Mexico
La Lomita - Best chili relleno
Pizza Rock - 2 for 1 Pizza on Tues night
Best Fish Tacos - Alexia y Giovanni

Cancun Valet - Best for transfers - nice driver and rig

Golf Cart - Had one for the week and added so much to our vaca, driving around where the locals live, something to do in the rain, access to everything!

Hotel Garrafon Castilla - A resort that time forgot, old school feel that is still very clean and empty! Great snorkeling (fish will attack you and lots of them) and best sunset.

Roca Mar Hotel - Nice balcony with view, spring water, nice pool, close to market, refridg, sleeping in the balcony hammock over the ocean.

North Beach - nice sand and can walk a half mile out!

Snorkel Tour - great fish and lots of em, coral mostly dead, great lunch too!

Chi Chi's Motel - Right on North Beach, nice rooms, king bed, A/C, fridge, $45/night.

Turtle Farm - neat to see they are helping with the turtles - stop in and give your donation!

Lowlights -

Jax - fried greasy gringo food, poor service and gringos/ex-pats who like to brag "did you know I live here!"

Hidalgo Street - Gringo restaurants, constant panhandling and timescare sales people.

Local native folk - not as friendly as in other Mexican towns, I think the constant berage of tourons coming over everyday from Cancun have jaded them. No one we found really went out of their way for you, and I speak spanish!

Digame Internet Cafe - Hotter than hell in there, girl at desk rude.

Hotel Roca Mar - Constant construction on roof of a new radio tower. Found out too you can negotiate your room rate there, dont pay what is listed on the website, if it is $60/night, ask for $45/night. Shutters in room leak in rain storms and you will get rained in your face.

North Beach - Saved drowning local guy, lifeguards were at beach bar drunk! Most of the beach has washed away and in slow season was very crowded! Ants and no see um's at sunset.

Day trips from Cancun - Island gets crowded with multiple tourons from Cancun during the day. Dolphin Experience and pet the shark - just free the wildlife already!

Cancun - Nice Hotels, but prices and feel is that of Miami or Las Vegas.

We had a great time, don't think we will be back anytime soon, so many other places to visit and other Mexico places that we liked better.
