Steve & Grace's Day 5 -- Garrafon de Castilla

I知 so excited! Today we plan to walk down to Garrafon de Castilla and snorkel. They open at 9:00 but I知 up at the crack of dawn. I grab a few delicious Bimbo snacks (Multigrano Lunaza and Fresco fruit bars) and head down to the beach for breakfast. A companion is waiting and I知 thinking he might be quite hungry. When he sees my food, he looks the other way. I知 amazed. I set a bite down on the chair beside me and he gently eats it and looks away. Not the slightest bit of begging. We share the rest of breakfast and this heavenly atmosphere.

We are the first ones to arrive at Garrafon. The snorkeling is incredible but I知 watching out for that barracuda I壇 been warned about. There he is I hear my breath skip a beat! We see several more throughout the day. One huge one that just stops and we have a stare down for quite some time. We feed the fish and one bites my head. It痴 hard to laugh with a snorkel in your mouth but we managed! In and out of the water several times, once I snorkel just off the shore all by myself. I知 getting so brave!

So much fun and incredibly beautiful!

We walk up to the showers and stop for a quick quesadilla. The waiter is very friendly and tries to talk us into a snorkeling trip to Manchones Reef for $15 a piece. We can see the boats out at the reef from here. He shows us beautiful photos but we are too content where we are. I have a Pina Colada. It痴 creamy and quite large. The best one so far! There痴 a huge iguana sunning himself on the sidewalk but the camera is out of photos. I get caught by a local doing the iguana walk and decide I壇 better sit down and finish my drink.

We hike on back to the room. But before we shower, we have to take a picture in front of Mar y Sol with our snorkel hair. My coworker, Elizabeth, has dubbed Mar y Sol as the 釘ad Hair Day Hotel after seeing a photo Marcia sent us to let us know how it looked after Wilma痴 visit. We had promised Elizabeth that we would take a picture of our snorkel hair in front of the 釘ad Hair Day Hotel.

Showered and off we go. I am determined to get that taxi Donna had promised me for 9 pesos from the colonias to downtown. We have to walk past the bus stop at Mundaca Park toward the colonias. It's sprinkling out. We turn down one driver who wants 20 pesos. We walk one more block and I知 sure this is considered the colonias now. We practice our best Spanish on the next taxi driver. Buenos Dias, Senior. Cuanto ir al Centro? Nueve pesos, por favor? Si? Gracias! Off we go! I知 so proud! He ends up getting a fat tip just for being honest!

We stroll down to let Donna know we plan to take the El Farito snorkel trip at noon the following day but she痴 not at Aqua Adventures. Sonia, the owner, is and is delightful. We chat and sign up for another great adventure!

Steve wants to rent a scooter so we cruise over to Ciro's. It痴 5:20 and they close at 5:00. That痴 ok, maybe later our new phrase that Jorge has taught us mas tardes. I知 glad we were too late because as we walk back down Hidalgo and past Miguel痴 Moonlight. I recognize Jan and Bruce from Doreese痴 trip report and stop in to say hi. Jan is flabbergasted by how many people have recognized them since they had arrived the day before. Doreese has made them famous!

I haven稚 mentioned Allen from Colorado yet. We met him as he was checking in to Bucaneros a few days ago. We ran in to him almost every day and became friends. We hope to stay in touch.

And this darling Mayan princess who wouldn't smile at first until she saw her picture on the camera. We asked her to smile with a little sign language and she gave us this. Reminds me of the pigtails I wore as a little girl.

It's sprinkling a little more seriously now, so we duck into a t-shirt shop. We find three Isla Mujeres t-shirts for $10. We hang out for awhile and meet the vendor, a nice young man who has moved here from Oaxaca.

We take a taxi to Shanghai Chinese which is one block north of Mundaca Park. The taxi driver had no clue where we were going. We had to direct him. It was still sprinkling outside but not cold at all. This restaurant is 鍍o go only and is simply a hallway with the menu on one wall. We got one dish for around $6 and it fed us for 2 meals. It was delicious!

This sweet little girl came out to let us take her photo.

We spend the evening on the beach again. It was the perfect place to be.
