Just a quick trip report of my stay at Gran Caribe Real Resort in Cancun with 2 day trips over to Isla Mujeres and another day trip down to Playa del Carmen.
My friend and I left out of Vancouver,BC on April 14th flying direct to Cancun. We had free transfers with our package but I decided to pre-book Best Day to pick us up and get us to the Hotel quicker. We did not have to wait too long before they had all the people in the shuttle bus and we were off.It was cloudy in Cancun when we arrived and a bit cooler than when I was there last January. We checked in and got a lovely ocean/pool view but they did not have 2 beds available so we had to share a king size bed (OK you stay on your side & I'll stay on mine)
The Hotel stated it was a 5 star but I would rate it a 3 star if that.It looks really nice but the food and amenities were not as good as when I have booked my usual budget 3 1/2 star Hotel. We had a good time anyway but I would NEVER stay at that Hotel or in Cancun again as it is just not for me.
Anyway on the 3rd day my friend decided to come with me to Isla Mujeres. We caught the R1 city bus ($7 pesos) down to Playa Tortuga and caught the ferry ($150 pesos return). It was a quick but pretty chilly ride over to Isla as it was a cloudy cool morning.Arrived on Isla and went straight to the HSBC bank to get some pesos then off to the Super Xpress for some water and then next door to Adrian's to use the Internet. We then wandered down Hidalgo where the street was just waking up and pretty deserted at that time.I stopped in to Suites Los Arcos to confirm my reservations for a whole month next February, yippee!!
We walked along the beach towards Playa Sol and found that it was flooded on Sergio's side and had lost some beach since I was there in January probably due to high winds the night before.
They have added a plastic fenced border around the Volleyball Court which is bit of an eye sore in my opinion.
We sat ourselves down at Caribbean Queen since there was more beach there and not as much seaweed.I noticed that the 2 times I went over to Isla this visit that Sergio's never bothered to clean up all the seaweed but Caribbean Queen kept there beach clean and inviting so there were more people sitting in that area.I decided to go for my walk down towards the Avalon to see if anymore changes had occurred.
There was not as much water under the Avalon Bridge as when I was there last January but the water was calm and beautiful.
We spent the whole day at Caribbean Queen sunning, swimming and drinking frio cervesa's.Then we wandered back up Hidalgo to have lunch at Miguel's.I had been dreaming of his Coconut Shrimp and Pomegranite Margarita's.My friend had the chicken quesadilla's.
We then stopped at Bamboo to say Hola to Rob and found him with his daughter and new puppy. Both his daughter and the puppy are soooo cute.
After a wonderful late lunch we had to catch the last ferry back to Playa Tortuga and that was going to be my only visit to Isla Mujeres this trip.
