New Years Eve 2009 on Isla Mujeres

By: whozat
Date: 1/1/2010

(thot I had
"retired"
from the message board...
from the trip reports...
lurkerdom suits my soul...
but Carl asked...and I promised...3 trip reports...
this is "PART ONE")

NEW YEARS EVE TRIP REPORT
(this one is for Carl...thanks buddy...thanks for asking...)
mostly pics...

I have written about New Years Eve in the past...I think I still have a New Years Eve report with the "Isla Stories" from a couple of years ago...New Years Eve on Isla Mujeres is my favorite holiday...this is an annual thing for me...I usually fly solo, but this year I brought an "entourage" of friends and family, to share the party...

I also have pics and a story from our Pirate Party Sunset Cruise of Jan 2 2010 and that is forthcoming...and I have lots of "food porn" to share...more pics on facebook and you can always find something goofy on my blog: http://planetascottozoid.blogspot.com/

So here are some cut and paste and images of this past New Years Eve...most of the time I was having too much fun to remember to take photos...dancing and laughing...but here goes anyway...

New Years Eve lunch on the beach at Playa Sol...

New Years Eve sunset at Playa Sol...

Happy Holidays on the Zocalo...

From the Zocalo, the baby Jesus awaits the new year too...

Christmas Trees in the Tropics, I love it...

Gotta stock up on party supplies...like beer...

And snacks...

And party favors...

All over the island, all around the zocalo...a great night for street food...

SIghts...sounds...aromas...

The special tastes of Mexico are even more intense on the last night of the old year...

Our New Years Eve really starts with the burning of Old Man 2009...

Laura and Kathy pose for a pre mortem photo with the guest of (dis) honor...

Cousin Laura, The Pirate Princess and El Patron Pirata...and the Burning Dude...moments before the fun begins...

First the ladies dance...a Dance of Dishonor...out with the old...

Everyone is laughing, screaming, hopping up and down...the ladies dance back and around...

Adios, viejo...you gonna burn baby burn...

And then the men dance, mocking the old year...

A well lubricated Patron Pirata joins the men in the dance...

New Years Eve on Isla Mujeres is my favorite holiday of the year...

We dance and taunt El Viejo until almost midnight...then at the stroke of 12...

The effigy is stuffed with straw...and fireworks...

He pops...and crackles...and explodes...and burns...

When we realize that the plastic chair the effigy sits in is about to catch fire, we flee from the noxious fumes and head to Miguels Moonlight for refills in our go cups...and then on to the Zocalo...

Laura shakes a homemade cascarrone, a beer can filled with dry beans for shaking and rattling...

The band played all night...and we danced most of the night too...

Everywhere...the sounds and sights of the New Years Eve fiesta...

What a great band..."Super Crack"...I remember them from last year...great non stop dancing action...

After a while, we head back to Miguels Moonlight for refills and bathroom breaks...then back to the Zocalo for more music more dancing...

We held on until about 4:30am, settled up the tab with Miguel, then went for a ride on the golf cart...we had hoped to make it to Punta Sur for the sunrise...but about half an hour before sunrise we gave up, went back to the apartment in La Gloria to crash...and dream...and smile...

Smile for a great start to a new year...and start making plans to do it all over again next December 31...
