My husband and I took a quick getaway to Isla Mujeres to flee the cold of Cleveland (and came back just in time for a blizzard!). We don't really have any crazy stories and it rained a bit so we were actually stuck in our room a couple times, so this shouldn't be too long.
Our hotel: We stayed in the Castle section of the Cabanas Maria del Mar. I had actually been a bit nervous about it since it wasn't our first choice and it doesn't get mentioned her much, but we couldn't have been happier. The location was absolutely perfect. If we were out on the beach and I wanted to grab the camera or more sunblock I just ran in and got it in two minutes. And the room was spotless every day. That's big praise for the maid because there was nowhere to wash sand off your feet before going up to the Castle rooms, so we dragged a lot of sand back to our room. I really liked the bathroom, too.
Food: We didn't have one bad meal, which we owe to the great advice given on this board and MapChick's map.
*Something right on Hidalgo with Sombrero in it (sorry I can't remember the exact name!): We just ducked in this place to escape a sudden downpour and they had the best guac we had on the trip.
*Baseball tacos: The best tacos I've ever eaten. And for five tacos and two beers it was under $10.
*La Mexicana rotisserie chicken (Hidalgo): I don't know if this is just a Sunday lunch thing, but we were able to sit there and eat. We split half a chicken and with the rice and tortillas it made a great lunch. The only blemish was the jerk tourist who kicked one of the cats that was hanging around as he was leaving, but we tried to make it up to the little critter with some scritches and pats.
*Bamboo: This is where we watched the Superbowl. The staff was very nice and even brought around chicken wings for everyone for the special occasion. Very good margaritas.
*La Malquerida: Really nice atmosphere and we both enjoyed our dishes--enchiladas in red sauce for my husband and a enormous taco with beef, chicken and mushrooms for me.
*Aluxes coffe house: We're not big breakfast people so coffee and banana bread from this place was perfect for us.
*Jax: We had a late afternoon snack there and the food was fine and the view upstairs is great. I'll just note that the fish in the fish tacos is fried, which my husband wasn't expecting, but I thought they were really good.
