We visited Isla Mujeres from May 9-May16, 2007 and stayed at Ixchel Beach Hotel Condominiums.
Per the helpful instruction of our host, we were met at the airport with a pre-arranged taxi and went directly to the ferry dock. The whole process couldn’t have gone more smoothly. It certainly helps to have a person in-the-know about the island and transportation on your side and Mr. Buckingham knows all the helpful hints. The little bit of preparation that we did per his advice made everything move swiftly and smoothly once we landed.
The moment we embarked the ferry, we feasted on the view of the gorgeous aqua water, sunshine and the view of the Port coming to Isla Mujeres. We had help from “bicycle guy” getting our luggage to Ixchel Beach Hotel. We walked thru the charming downtown area and scoped out the many places that we wanted to visit during our stay.
We were greeted by the most gracious and welcoming front desk staff at Ixchel Beach, Yadi, Daivi and Giovanni (probably mis-spelled-so sorry). The staff at Ixchel spoke excellent English, which was very helpful because our Spanish is very poor (working on fixing that before next visit!)
When we checked into our room, we could not have been more pleased. The suite was very comfortable with our balcony overlooking the pool and courtyard and a lovely view of the ocean. It was simply amazing!! There is a bit of construction going on with another unit directly across from us and we look forward to seeing it finished on a return visit.
We changed and went to the beach as quickly as we could. On our way out we were warmly greeted by Pablo, the bartender and host of the bar at Ixchel. They very quickly set us up with chairs and an umbrella and we settled in for a very relaxing afternoon of strolling on the beach and taking in the breathtaking view.
We went into town and picked up a few essentials and again scoped where we were going to eat dinner that evening. We chose a delightful place near the ferry dock and had the best coconut shrimp ever (Can’t remember the name of the place, but it had the checkered tablecloths).
A few of the places we chose for breakfast were Jax Bar & Grill, a French café downtown and our favorite was Elements of the Island.. Highly recommended. We also had breakfast “poolside with Pablo” a couple times and visited with other guests staying at Ixchel. It was great fun to get to visit with a newlywed couple from FL and a couple from Denver, who we ended up hanging out with a bit.
We had dinner at the Argentina (so-so), Bamboo (excellent!!), Casa O’s (an Isla must!!) and bought the full roasted chicken dinner from around the corner of the market (delicious) and brought back to our condo. There were so many places that we missed, can’t wait to go back and try all new cuisine (plus a few favorites).
We hit many of the shops and found great gifts for those we left behind. All in all…we just can’t say enough about the island and Ixchel Condominiums! We will be in touch soon to schedule our next visit! Muchos Gracias all!
