Today is another big day on our vacation...swimming with the Whale Sharks!!! ...I didnt even blink an eye when I came across this adventure when researching Isla Mujeres...I knew I wanted to do it...the hubby on the other hand wasnt as excited as I was...and it wasnt until yesterday that I asked him if he really wanted to do this...he admitted that he was a little wary of this adventure...he does have a bad back...and the thought of being out in the middle of nowhere...well...really wasnt his cup of tea...he didnt know if he would get sea sick...and didnt want to be out in the middle of nowhere with no place to go...I of course understood...and we both agreed that I would go by myself and he would enjoy the island on his own...with that settled I packed up what I would need on the boat...I did buy Gravol and Sea-bands for the hubby in case he did decide to go...and I thought I would still bring them with me...you know...just in case "someone else" needed something if they got sick...underwater camera(s)...regular camera...snorkel and mask...that should do it...off we go to Tonys house...We are the first ones there...sitting in the sun on the bench in front of his place...the merchants are busy wheeling produce and fish for the day to and fro...then I meet the first of my shipmates...Mark and Britt are a young couple who also happen to be first time visitors to Isla...we exchange stories...they are leaving tomorrow actually and decided to end their trip with the Whale Sharks...next comes Denise...and Island regular...and by regular I mean at least 4 times a years she gets to come to this wonderful place...Im so jealous...then arrives Dennis and Bonnie...a wonderful couple who also make Isla their home for about 3 months out of the year...and then some!! Tony outfits us with flippers and wet suits...and we are waiting for the group from Cozumel to arrive...

Tony and his 2 brothers (I feel so bad that I dont remember their names )...they are packing coolers and gear and walking it to the beach where the boat is...soon we follow them to the boat...still no sign of the Cozumel group...Tony doesnt want to leave them behind so we make a trip to the UltraMar dock...and there he finds them....he will take them in his other boat and us 6 will go with the brothers...let the adventure begin!

The ride will take about 1.5 hours...the water is a little rough...and the ride at times has pretty hard landings...water spraying...but it is still warm and the sun still burns if you arent under the canopy...earlier when we were all chatting we were talking about sea sickness...Dennis and Mark both took some medication so they wouldnt get sick...they had a feeling that they would...I on the other hand grew up fishing...on the water...taken cruises...never EVER had a problem with sea sickness...but I was sure to let them know if they needed anything...I had brought some stuff that could help...them....
At one point looking back to where we had traveled from I see something in the clouds...OMG Is that a funnel cloud???? Sure enough...the brothers slow the boat so we can take pictures of this waterspout forming...it gets thicker and it touches the water...you can even see where the water is disturbed when it touches...Is it getting closer to us???...OK its get outta here!...back to bouncing around the boat.....I feel GREAT!!! I keep asking Mark how he is feeling and he says he too is feeling fine...I am happy nobody is getting sick...that would really suck! Amazingly the ride goes by a lot faster than I thought it would and soon we can see a gathering of boats ahead of us...our boat slows down...so they can navigate and not run into a pod...and then we see them for the very first time....at first it looks like shark fins sticking out of the water...but as they get closer you can see this behemoth of a body attached to that fin!!! OMG they are so big!!!...the boast comes to a stop....and we move about trying to get a closer look as they slowly...lazily swim by...so many of them!...then it happens....I get a small whiff of boat gasoline from the engine...the boat is swaying with the waves....and this undeniable feeling of nausea hits me...I am seriously looking around wide eyed....with disbelief on my face...I am going to to vomit!?!?!...youre kidding me....I am gonna get sick...everyone is looking at the whales and taking pictures...I am looking around wondering where I am going to barf....cause I am gonna do it....no questions asked....1 heave...2 heave...over the side I go....sorry whales...a few times I do this...then I hear one of the brothers say "OK who goes first...3 people only."...I really dont think anyone saw me yet...I say you guys go first...with a smile on my face....I would really kill to see what I actually looked like at that point...as they are getting ready to enter the water...the nausea has abated a bit so I quickly go to my bag and put on those sea-bands...making sure they hit the right pressure points...open my unopened bottle of Gravol and pop two pills....water...OK....hopefully this helps....AH!!... More whales around us....take some pictures I remind myself....so I do just that....I was probably given several minutes of reprieve...then the nausea hit again...I cant believe how strong the urge to get sick is...1 heave...2 heave...Look out whales here it comes again....Gravol does NOT taste good coming back up I tell ya....the group comes back in and it is my turn to go out...and Im going out too...there is no way I am letting this stop me...I get in the water....it is cool but still comfortable....I am looking around me....I cant see any Whales close by....so I decide to try the goggles and see how clear the water is....I look around then down at me feet....I let out the loudest snorkel scream EVER!!! There was a whale swimming right beneath me....QUICK take a picture!!!!...this is utterly incredible....You are so immersed in the awesomeness that you must remind yourself to take pictures...seriously...one of the brothers directs me to another group swimming...I get within feet of them...no touching allowed...but I cant help it if they are coming towards ME!..too cool...sooooo close....I am in awe....and then the nausea comes AGAIN!!!...Im in the water...what do I do....turn my head and barf....I dont even want to think about this.....I gotta get back in the boat....the other 3 go out again...one of the brothers by this time notices that I am sick...and quickly cuts up a lime for me to suck on...drink lots of water too he says...I smile...take the lime...and...suck...I manage to take some pics of the group adventures with the whales...we all laugh when someone get so close and they scream through their snorkel...this is really exciting...besides the fact...and I love this...HEY I think the lime is helping.....1 heave...2 heave...nope...and Lime doesnt taste very good coming up either...my turn to go back in the water...if I want......"are you sure" they ask me....HELL YA!...in I go...more great close encounters...and no feeding the whales this time ;) ...I get s few pictures...not as many as I had hopes..but we talked as a group that we would exchange emails so we could share our photos.....I really hope someone got a pic of me in the water with the sharks...sans barfing...The brothers open one of those big ass bottles of Sol and begin pouring classes...I got my lime and I pass...we clink glasses and Lime....and smiles on our faces are as big as they can get..INCREDIBLE experience!!! Now we will head back for some snorkeling and lunch...once the boat was well away from any whale pods we sped up and headed back....I felt absolutely fine when the boat was moving...no more nausea....go figure...We stop by Avalon and drop anchor...I feel fine still and we all jump in and snorkel a bit...then back to dry land where Tony and the brothers feed us a great lunch on the beach...AND I get that glass of Sol I missed out on earlier....tastes so good!... We say our goodbyes...I cant wait to see the pictures!!...and I cant wait to tell the hubby about...me getting sick...he is gonna LOVE IT!!!

I really cant say one bad thing about today....Captain Tony and his brothers are WONDERFUL!!! I highly recommend them for any type of tour...his reputation precedes him!
Seeing and swimming with the Whales was phenomenal....a definite bucket list kind of thing! They are so docile and peaceful...beautiful...I really would do this again!

Hubby and I have a great laugh at my expense...but then again our relationship is based on laughs...this was a perfect day...

To be continued....
