Day 1 - 4 newbies from Oregon

Date: 6/3/2007

Our day began early. We had a 6:20 am flight out of PDX and we live about 1 ˝ hours from the airport. The flight was smooth and our connection in Denver quick. We arrived in Cancun at 3:30 pm and we all cleared immigration without any delays.

Nothing could have prepared us for the madness that is the Cancun airport. We made our way out the door to look for our van from Cancun Valet and there it was. In no time at all we were on our way to Puerto Juarez. Our driver offered to stop at the store so that we could get some refreshments, but by that time we just wanted to get IM.

We got to the ferry just as one was leaving, so we sat down and enjoyed a drink. What a nice surprise to find that beer was $1 each.

In no time at all we on the island. We hired a nice man with a bicycle to take our luggage to our hotel. Along the way we stopped for a 6 pack and some water. He did tell us to be sure to go the grocery store if planned to buy more because we get a better price. It was so nice to walk through down town and see everything, much better than a taxi.

I had booked our condo over the internet so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but we were all blown away. We stayed at the Ixchel Hotel and it was wonderful, it was more than we could have hoped for. We stayed in unit 409/410, it is and ocean front unit with a wonderful wrap around patio. The staff at the front desk was fantastic, they would even have a golf cart waiting for us in the morning for the same price as going out and finding one on our own.

Everyone was hungry so we set to find something to eat. We went to the Sunset Grill simply because it was so close. The food was good, but it was a bit overpriced. I had the shrimp quesadillas and they were fantastic. My husband had some Calamri and he was impressed. I also had my first Mango Margarita , mmmmmmmmmmm. Of course we had to have some guacamole.

While we waiting for our food we all took turns getting in the water. It was so refreshing!

What a perfect end to a long day, watching the sun set on the beach while sipping a margarita!

We were all tired so we headed back to the condo no one had been able to sleep on the plane because were all so excited. We had arranged to have a golf cart waiting for us the next morning so that we could begin our adventure.
