Every one, I mean everyone was great. The room at the Avalon Reef Club was smallish, but comfortable and very clean – beds were very hard, but that was fine for us. The all inclusive meals were solid, and you could make a reservation for Mi Casa, Su Casa at the Avalon Reef Resort for your evening meal, but you must dress in dress slacks, shoes (no sandals) and dress shirt and something nice for the ladies. There are two restaurants with Mi Casa, Su Casa being much more formal and requires reservations. Guests can only eat the evening meal at Mi Casa, Su Casa. The other restaurant is buffet, with a good variety of food for all meals with dress being casual. The Avalon Reef Resort was an excellent all inclusive place for us to stay. If this is your first trip to a foreign country, get yourself a passport – it’s easier to get in and out of Mexico and back into your originating country. Be prepared for a culture shock, on Isla Mujeres everything runs slower, and keep attitudes at home. Be prepared to tip for everything. We averaged about 200 pesos a day. Don’t be cheap on tipping. Word to the wise, tip your maid with 100 pesos right off the bat, she’ll treat you well. The minimum wage in Mexico is just $4.00 per day, that’s right, per day.
You can get a gas powered golf cart for about $55.00 per day, US. The island is only five miles long, but there is a lot to do, and there is a good night life available. The golf cart gets up to 4 people around easily anywhere on the island. The month of May seems to have been the best month to go because the temperatures averaged around 84 degrees. Inexpensive shopping in the village was excellent– t-shirts for $2.50 each. We actually had one local merchant escort us around to find what we were looking for, and he did find the inexpensive vendors. We shopped both Isla Mujeres and Cancun, and Isla is the place to buy. We just got back and we’re planning our next trip. The Avalon Reef, and Isla Mujeres, was a breath of fresh air and a wonderful place to finally have a REAL vacation. Isla Mujeres has some of the best people anywhere in the world, and I have been many places in this old world.
