Isla Mujeres February 2007

Day 6

Sunday February 25

“Crazy Canuck Day”

Another morning dawns and I am there to greet it…although a few clouds are getting in the way!

I linger on the balcony for a while but the clouds aren’t leaving…

Back to bed for a while and by 7:30, I drag Vince out of bed for a walk. Off along parts of the malecon to the north…still under repair from Wilma. That huge reception tower is on the roof of the Roca Mar…

As always, the breaking waves provide spectacular scenery…

More views as we round the corner by the ‘rock house’ and take in the view to the west side of the island…

Ahhhh….the clouds are disappearing and the day is turning into a beauty….

Looking back towards the bridge and the east side…

The corner by NaBalam that just keeps getting smaller and smaller…

For comparison, this is the same area in February 2006…

Around the corner, and facing towards more of Playa Norte….notice the posts in the water…

For comparison, this is the same area in February 2006…where did all that sand go!!!???

These posts were completely buried in past years….mother nature is constantly making adjustments…

Playa Norte in front of Buho’s…

The palms are still standing proud…

A close look at the palm tree roots…

Back to the room since we are starting to die from heat and thirst! Vincente at Roca Mar tells us that we can move into ‘our’ room Right Now! Yikes! It turns out that a family is waiting to move into the room that we are currently in, so we spend the next 20 minutes quickly moving all our things from one room to the other. Whew! Lots of work, but it feels like we are really ‘home’ now! We also get the key to Ingrid and Rick’s room as we plan to stock their fridge with water, juice, beer etc…essentials! After the long walk and the room change, I need breakfast!

Off to Cazuela M & J’s where Vince enjoys his usual, Omelet Holbox and chaya, while I am good and have a fruit plate and more water. It’s all delicious as always. I ask Pedro if his wife Norma is at her stand on the east side. She is, so we hop on the moped and zoom off to deliver a big bag of various coloured beads that I have brought for her. She was very happy for them.

Next stop, Playa Norte!...We park the moped near Buho’s and head straight for the sand. I can’t wait to get in the water!

Feeling refreshed, I’m happy to see mi amiga Darcy from Calgary arriving on the beach. I have the Maná CD along for her as she is a fan of theirs as well. We have a nice long chat….

Just 2 Canuck chicas on the beach, having fun!...

Darcy heads back to find her boyfriend Barry, and Vince remembers that it’s Sunday and zooms off on the moped to pick up an order of boneless ribs from the rib man….1/2kg for $75MXP. Very rich but finger lickin’ good too!

We spend the rest of the afternoon just lazing away…resting up before our friends from home, Ingrid and Rick arrive tonight. We make our way to Sergio’s for the sunset and find Stacy and Colin there, already enjoying the view…

Strawberry mango daiquiris are ordered and we slurp away as the sun sets on another perfect day…

Time is slipping away and we have all agreed to meet at the ferry dock at 7:20….the ferry that we think Ingrid and Rick might be on if they’re lucky. Quick showers and we arrive at the ferry dock to find Stacy and Colin, waiting and happily sipping away on pomegranate margs from Miguels. I think they might have enjoyed a few of them as Colin is singing “Hold on to what you got…” complete with falsetto voice and a few Michael Jackson ‘grabs’….he is way too funny! Ok…so you had to be there to really appreciate the moment!...

In between the giggles, we keep an eye out for our amigos, but they are not on this ferry. Hmmm…we have a bit of time until the next one arrives. Faster than you can say ‘here we come Miguel’, we walk the few blocks and get more pomegranate margs. They take a while to get so we have to guzzle them in order to get back to the ferry in time. Ok, not such a great idea to drink those potent poms so quickly!.....we are all just a tad corked by the time we reach the ferry, not to mention the brain freeze! Oh, and look who’s there! Yuppers, Ingrid and Rick are here on Isla…woohoo! I’m not sure that we made a very good impression, but we did try to help them with their luggage! Back to the Roca Mar where we give them about 5 minutes to get ready…

Off to Miguel’s for refills! Pomegranate margs all around…do they come in pitchers??

Thinking that food might be a good idea, we order several different kinds of fajitas. Lots of chatter as we listen to the 2 man band….how ‘bout that sign?!...

I think there may have been more margs….Miguel was giving us 2 for 1 so how could we refuse! When it’s finally time to leave, we have to hang onto each other….For some strange reason one of Stacy’s fingers was pointing in a strange direction, so I thought I better cover it up!...not sure what she was up to!

Otherwise we might all end up doing the ‘matrix’!!!...

Stacy and Colin leave us at this point for partying somewhere (back at their room, I think!), and the four of us wander up Hidalgo. We find ‘Sergio’ from Fayne’s enjoying his evening off…

Later in our holiday, we found him working at the new Cuban restaurant! We make our way to the beach…Ingrid and Rick just wanting to feel the sand beneath their toes…

It’s been a day filled with crazy Canucks….does life get any better than sharing Isla with friends!
