Wailua Falls is a step off the beaten path. Located at the south end of Wailua River, it cascades in two streams to a spot at least 80 feet below. Some say the distance is more accurately described as 200 feet. It is said that early Hawaiians jumped from the falls to prove their manhood. The falls were not as spectacular as when I have visited them in the fall or spring.
Just north of the town of Kappa is this view point. I am looking back toward Kappa.
Dedicated in 1913 the Kilauea Lighthouse served as a pivotal navigation aid for ships on the Orient run. Today, it is one of Kauais most visited sights with more than 500,000 annual visitors. Kilauea is the northernmost point of the Hawaiian Islands. Surrounding the lighthouse is the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, home to an array of protected sea birds.
This photo is looking back at the lighthouse from the road to Kalihiwai Bay.
This is the view from the Princeville Hotel over looking Hanalei Bay. Princeville is a large resort area with a ton of condos and houses as well as a well known golf course. It is pretty $$$.
I love Hanalei. It is a funky little town with some nicely restored historical buildings.
This is an old school that now houses shops and restaurants.
Afernoon at Hanalei Bay
We went back another day to have a beach day. The water was like glass. Hanalei Bay usually is a very safe place for children to play in the water. This day there was a lot of activity setting up the judging stands and bleachers on the beach for the Hawaiian annual canoe races which were to begin the next day.
Driving past Hanalei the road becomes narrow and there are many one way bridges. Along the way there are a few places to pull over and take in the wonderful views. This is Lumahai Beach. This beach was made famous by the movie South Pacific where Mitzi Gaynor "washed that man right out of her hair"!
Driving back toward Princeville is an overlook of the Hanalei Valley. There are taro fields and other crops grown here. The 917-acre Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge has been established to protect endangered and other birds.
